Deep Brain Stimulation Surgery for Movement Disorders

Investigating a Type of Surgery for Movement Disorders

Recruiting
18-99 years
All
Phase N/A

This study investigates how deep brain stimulation (DBS) surgery affects movement disorders such as Parkinson's disease, dystonia, and essential tremor. These disorders can cause abnormal movements, and DBS is a procedure that uses a device to send signals to the brain to help control these movements. The purpose is to understand how DBS impacts these conditions and to collect data on brain function during the surgery.

Participants will undergo various tests, including physical and neurological exams, to determine eligibility for DBS surgery. During the surgery, a device is placed in the chest to send signals to the brain. Participants will perform movement and memory tests before and during the surgery. After the procedure, they will have follow-up visits to adjust the device settings and monitor their progress.

  • Who can participate: Adults aged 18 and older with movement disorders such as Parkinson's disease, dystonia, or essential tremor may be eligible. Participants must have conditions not adequately controlled by medication and be able to provide informed consent.
  • Study details: Participants will undergo DBS surgery, where a device is implanted to control movement disorders. A placebo is not used in this study.
  • Study timelines and visits: The study will last 3 months. The study requires 3 visits.

Learn more about clinical trials

What is a clinical trial?

A clinical trial is a study designed to test specific interventions or treatments' effectiveness and safety, paving the way for new, innovative healthcare solutions.

Why should I take part in a clinical trial?

Participating in a clinical trial provides early access to potentially effective treatments and directly contributes to the healthcare advancements that benefit us all.

How long does a clinical trial take place?

The duration of clinical trials varies. Some trials last weeks, some years, depending on the phase and intention of the trial.

Do I get compensated for taking part in clinical trials?

Compensation varies per trial. Some offer payment or reimbursement for time and travel, while others may not.

How safe are clinical trials?

Clinical trials follow strict ethical guidelines and protocols to safeguard participants' health. They are closely monitored and safety reviewed regularly.
